Overview
What is the UK Global Talent visa?
The Global Talent visa lets you live and work in the UK if you’re a leader (‘exceptional talent’) or a potential leader (‘exceptional promise’) in academia or research, arts and culture, or digital technology. You can be employed, self-employed or a company director, and change jobs without telling the Home Office.
Most people apply in two stages: first for an endorsement from the body that covers their field, then for the visa. If you’ve personally won a prize on the Home Office’s list, you skip the endorsement. The route can lead to settlement after 3 or 5 years.
✓This is your visa if…
- You’re recognised as a leader or emerging leader in research, the arts, architecture, design, fashion, film and TV, or digital technology
- You can get an endorsement from the body for your field, or you’re the named winner of a listed prize
- You’re 18 or over and want to work flexibly, for yourself, for employers or both, without a sponsor
- You plan to keep earning in your field in the UK, which you’ll need to extend or settle

Could you qualify? Five questions, one minute
Answer honestly. Nothing is saved or sent: this is a general guide, not advice on your case.
Do you work in academia or research, arts and culture (including architecture, design, fashion, film and TV), or digital technology? These are the only fields the route covers.
Can you show you’re a leader, or a potential leader, in that field? For example international recognition, awards or publications. In research, an eligible job, fellowship or UKRI-funded grant can be enough.
Have you won a prize on the Home Office’s list, or can you get letters of recommendation from recognised experts in your field?Prize winners skip the endorsement. Most endorsement routes need letters written for this application.
Are you 18 or over?
If you’re in the UK, are you on a visa you can switch from? You can’t switch from a visit, short-term student, seasonal worker, domestic worker or Parent of a Child Student visa.
Eligibility
Global Talent visa requirements
You need an endorsement or a listed prize before the visa stage. The visa stage itself is short: there’s no English, salary or savings requirement.
Who endorses you
- Academia or research: the Royal Society, the British Academy, the Royal Academy of Engineering or UK Research and Innovation (UKRI)
- Arts and culture: Arts Council England, with architecture judged by RIBA, fashion by the British Fashion Council, film and TV by Pact, and design by the Design Business Association
- Digital technology: Tech Nation
- You apply as a leader (exceptional talent) or as a potential leader early in your career (exceptional promise)
You can apply for the endorsement and the visa at the same time, but if the endorsement is refused, the visa application fails too.
Academia and research
- Fast track: an eligible academic or research job at an approved UK institution, a listed fellowship held in the last 5 years, or a key role on a grant from a UKRI-endorsed funder worth at least £30,000 over 2 years
- Peer review: you must be an active researcher with a PhD or equivalent research experience, and send letters from eminent people in your field
- Exceptional promise applicants must be early in their career
- Research endorsements lead to settlement after 3 years, whether you’re endorsed for talent or promise
Time abroad doing research can still count towards settlement, so keep a record of your trips.
Arts, culture and digital technology
- Arts leaders need a substantial track record in at least 2 countries; potential leaders a developing record in at least 1
- Digital technology: proven technical or business expertise, recognition in the last 5 years, and evidence for 2 of the listed criteria
- Film and TV endorsements are for exceptional talent only, shown through major awards, nominations or Pact’s recognition list
- Architecture, fashion and design each have their own evidence criteria
Prize winners: if you personally won a prize on the Home Office’s list, you skip the endorsement and apply for the visa directly.
The visa application
- Apply no more than 3 months after the date on your endorsement letter
- You must be 18 or over; there’s no English, salary or savings test for the visa
- In the UK, you can switch from most visas, but not as a visitor, short-term student, seasonal worker, domestic worker or Parent of a Child Student, or with permission outside the Rules
- On a Student visa, you must have finished your course, or done at least 24 months of a full-time PhD
- A TB test is needed if you’re coming from a listed country
Had a government or international scholarship covering your fees and living costs in the last 12 months? You need its written consent.
Extending and settling
- To extend or settle, you must have earned money in the UK in your field, and your endorsement must not have been withdrawn
- No more than 180 days outside the UK in any 12 months, with some exceptions, such as research trips
- The Life in the UK test, and English speaking and listening at B1
- Time on some other work routes, such as Skilled Worker or Innovator Founder, can count towards the 3 or 5 years
Time as someone’s dependant doesn’t count towards your own qualifying period.
Documents
Global Talent visa documents: the easy part
Listing the documents is simple. Endorsements are won or lost on how well your evidence shows your standing, and that’s a judgment call.
What everyone needs
- Your passport
- Your CV, setting out your career and any publications
- Letters of recommendation from established experts in your field
- Evidence of your achievements, or your eligible job, fellowship or grant
- £Proof you’ve earned money in your field, when you extend or settle
- Proof of your relationship, if your partner or children apply
Plus a TB test if you’re coming from a listed country, written consent if you’ve had a full scholarship in the last 12 months, and certified translations of anything not in English or Welsh.

Avoid a refusal
Common Global Talent visa refusal reasons
Most problems arise at the endorsement stage, where an expert body judges your evidence. These are the issues we check first.
Evidence that misses the criteria
Each body sets out what counts, from media recognition to awards and exhibitions, and caps how many documents you can send.
We check: your evidence against your field’s criteria before you apply.
Generic recommendation letters
Letters must be written for this application, by recognised experts, and cover the points the endorsing body asks for.
We check: each letter covers what’s required and adds something new.
Talent when it should be promise
Applying as an established leader without the track record the criteria ask for risks a refusal. Promise has its own test, and affects when you can settle.
We check: which category fits your record, and what it means for settlement.
Applying too late
You must apply for the visa no more than 3 months after the date on your endorsement letter.
We check: your dates, so you apply in time.
Switching when you can’t
You can’t switch in the UK from a visit, short-term student, seasonal worker, domestic worker or Parent of a Child Student visa. Students must usually have finished their course.
We check: whether you can apply here or must apply from abroad.
No earnings in your field
To extend or settle, you must have earned money in the UK in the field you were endorsed in (or your prize’s field).
We check: your earnings record well before your visa ends.

FAQs
Global Talent visa questions, answered
Do I need a job offer for a Global Talent visa?
No. You don’t need a job offer or a sponsor. You can be employed, self-employed or a company director, and change jobs without telling the Home Office. The only work you can’t do is as a professional sportsperson or sports coach.
What’s the difference between exceptional talent and exceptional promise?
Exceptional talent is for people already recognised as leaders in their field. Exceptional promise is for people early in their career who show they could become leaders. In arts and culture and digital technology, promise means 5 years before you can settle rather than 3; in research, both lead to settlement after 3 years.
Can I bring my family?
Yes. Your husband, wife, civil partner or partner of at least 2 years, and your children under 18, can apply as your dependants. Each pays £766 plus the health surcharge, and they can work and study. Your partner can settle after 5 years as your partner.
Can I switch to a Global Talent visa in the UK?
Usually yes, from most visas, within 3 months of your endorsement. You can’t switch from a visit, short-term student, seasonal worker, domestic worker or Parent of a Child Student visa, or from permission outside the Rules. On a Student visa, you must have finished your course or done at least 24 months of a full-time PhD.
Do I need to earn a minimum salary?
No. There’s no salary, English or savings requirement for the visa. But to extend or settle, you must show you’ve earned money in the UK in your field during your last visa, for example with payslips.
How long does it take?
Endorsement usually takes 1 to 2 weeks on the research fast track, about 5 weeks for peer review, 5 to 8 weeks for digital technology and up to 8 weeks for arts and culture. The visa decision then usually takes 3 weeks from outside the UK or 8 weeks in the UK. You may be able to pay for a faster visa decision.
What if my endorsement is refused?
You can ask for a free review within 28 days, carried out by the same endorsing body. It only looks at whether your evidence was properly considered or the process went wrong, and you can’t add new evidence. Applying for an endorsement or a review doesn’t extend your current visa.
What if my visa application is refused?
You can apply for administrative review if you think the Home Office made a caseworking error; the fee is £80. Contact us quickly after a refusal so we can check your options.
