Unlike most UK work routes, the Youth Mobility Scheme places no requirement on the applicant to have secured employment before applying. Once granted, the visa allows holders to work in almost any role, switch employers freely, study, and become self-employed — subject to limited restrictions.

There is no salary threshold and no points requirement. Eligibility is based on nationality, age, and financial means. Some nationalities must first be selected through a ballot before they can submit a visa application.

This route does not lead to Indefinite Leave to Remain. However, it is widely used as a starting point for those who wish to gain UK work experience and later switch into a longer-term route such as the Skilled Worker Visa.

Nationals of Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Andorra, Iceland, Monaco, San Marino, and Uruguay, plus Hong Kong SAR and Taiwanese passport holders (via ballot), and certain British overseas nationality holders. You must be 30 or under at the time of application for most nationalities. Applicants from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and South Korea can apply up to age 35. You must be at least 18 when your visa starts.

What can I do on this visa? ⌃

You can work in almost any role, switch employers freely, study, and be self-employed on a limited basis. You cannot work as a professional sportsperson, take certain medical training posts, or access public funds.

How long does the visa last? ⌃

Two years for most nationalities. Nationals of Australia, Canada, and New Zealand can extend by a further 12 months from inside the UK, giving a maximum total stay of three years. All other nationalities are limited to two years with no extension available on this route.

What does it cost? ⌃

The visa application fee is £298. The Immigration Health Surcharge is charged at the reduced rate of £776 per year for Youth Mobility Scheme applicants — lower than the standard adult rate. This is paid upfront for the full duration of the visa.

Applicants must be a national of a participating country or territory, or hold a specified British nationality type.

  • Standard Route (Direct): Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Andorra, Iceland, Monaco, San Marino, Uruguay.
  • Ballot Route (Selection Required): Hong Kong (SAR passport holders), Taiwan, India (via the separate India Young Professionals Scheme ballot process).
  • British Nationality Types: British Overseas Citizens, British Overseas Territories Citizens, British Nationals (Overseas).
  • Indian Nationals Note: Apply under the separate India Young Professionals Scheme, requiring a ballot entry, a degree, and three years of skilled work experience.

Age Requirements

The scheme features standard and extended age limits based on country of origin, and enforces a strict single-use policy.

  • Standard Age Limit: You must be aged 18 or over when your visa starts, and 30 or under at the time of your application.
  • Extended Age Limit: Applicants from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and South Korea can apply up to the age of 35.
  • Timing Window: You may submit your application before your 18th birthday, provided the visa does not start before you turn 18.
  • Single-Use Only: You cannot have previously held a Youth Mobility Scheme Visa — this route can only be used once in your lifetime.

Personal Requirements

Applicants must satisfy background check rules and prove they do not have any minor dependents living with them.

  • No Dependent Children: You must not have children under 18 living with you or financially dependent on you at application time (independent children do not disqualify you).
  • No Dependants Permitted: Partners and family members cannot join as dependants on this route; they must qualify for their own visa independently.
  • Character Requirements: You must not have any unspent criminal convictions. Some nationalities may be required to provide a police certificate.
  • Tuberculosis Test: Applicants from countries listed on the Home Office's TB testing registry must provide a certificate from an approved clinic.

  • £2,530 in Savings: You must demonstrate that you have held at least £2,530 for 28 consecutive days, ending within 31 days of your application date.

  • No Public Funds: Youth Mobility Scheme visa holders cannot access UK public funds or financial assistance systems during their stay.

Ballot Requirement

High-demand territories must secure a selection place via a formal ballot pool before submitting a visa application.

  • Ballot Allocation: Where demand exceeds annual quotas, places are allocated by ballot. This applies to Hong Kong and Taiwan, while India uses a separate scheme ballot.
  • Ballot Entry: Applicants from Hong Kong and Taiwan must send a single email to the Home Office in the prescribed format during the ballot window (runs twice a year).

  • Standard Term lengths: Standard visa grant is 2 years. Holders from Australia, Canada, and New Zealand may extend by 12 months for a max stay of 3 years from within the UK.
  • No-Extension Limit: All other nationalities are limited to 2 years max and cannot extend. To stay longer, you must switch into an eligible route like the Skilled Worker Visa.
  • Permitted Work: Work in almost any role and switch employers freely. Professional sports, coaching, and training posts for doctors/dentists face restrictions.
  • Self-Employment Rules: Permitted on a limited basis only: no employees, equipment costs must be below £5,000, and no premises outside your home.
  • No Path to Settlement: This route does not lead to ILR. Time spent on this visa does not count towards the 5-year qualifying period for settlement.
