Transferring Trainees to the UK
The UK Graduate Trainee Visa is a sub-route under the Global Business Mobility framework for overseas businesses that need to transfer employees to their UK branch as part of a structured graduate training programme leading to a senior management or specialist role.
It is designed for employees of an overseas business who are being transferred to a linked UK entity to undertake a work placement as part of a structured graduate training programme. The purpose of the placement must be to develop the trainee towards a senior management or specialist position within the overseas business — not to fill a vacancy or carry out routine work in the UK operation.
Unlike the Senior or Specialist Worker route — which covers established employees in substantive roles — the Graduate Trainee route is specifically for those who are still in the early stages of a formal training programme. The salary threshold is lower to reflect the trainee nature of the role, but the requirement for a structured programme with clearly defined training objectives is strictly applied by UKVI.
This route does not lead to Indefinite Leave to Remain and cannot be extended. The maximum stay is one year.

No. This route does not lead to Indefinite Leave to Remain. It is a temporary visa. While you can switch to the Skilled Worker route from inside the UK, it is important to note that time spent on a Graduate Trainee Visa does not count towards the five-year qualifying period for ILR. The qualifying period begins only once you hold Skilled Worker permission.
