Overview

What are Entrepreneur Routes?

Entrepreneur Routes are UK immigration pathways for individuals who wish to establish, lead, or grow a business in the United Kingdom. They sit within the points-based immigration system and are distinct from standard work visa routes.

Unlike employer-sponsored routes, most Entrepreneur Routes are built around the applicant’s own business activity, professional profile, or academic background. They reflect the UK Government’s objective of attracting high-value business talent and encouraging innovation and investment. Different routes exist for different profiles — from founding a new business and accessing the UK market as a recognised leader in your field, to setting up the first UK branch of an overseas company. The appropriate pathway depends on your background, business objectives, and long-term plans.

Eligibility

Entrepreneur Routes — Eligibility Requirements

To qualify under the UK’s business and entrepreneur pathways, applicants must satisfy specific structural, logistical, and legal criteria set by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI).

Choosing the Correct Immigration Route

There is no single entrepreneur visa in UK immigration law. The appropriate route depends completely on your specific professional profile.

Core Matching Criteria:

  • Founding a completely new business structure.
  • Status as a globally recognised professional or leader.
  • Recent graduation status from a qualifying, prestigious international university.
  • Senior employee status tasked with expanding an overseas firm into the UK market.

Strategic Planning: Selecting the correct route at the very outset avoids unnecessary financial costs and lengthy processing delays.

All criteria outlined above directly reflect the latest official UK government guidance and immigration rules. A robust, well-prepared corporate application relies heavily on an aligned business plan, verified investment documentation, clean financial records, and valid third-party endorsement or sponsorship credentials.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are UK Entrepreneur Routes?

A group of immigration pathways within the points-based system for overseas nationals who want to establish businesses, practise their expertise, or expand overseas operations in the UK. They are distinct from employer-sponsored work visa routes.

Which route is right for me?

It depends on your profile. V Immigration provides eligibility assessments to identify the most appropriate route based on your business background, qualifications, and long-term objectives.

Can I bring my family?

Yes. Dependants — including a partner and dependent children — can apply on the Innovator Founder, Global Talent, High Potential Individual, and UK Expansion Worker routes, provided they meet the applicable requirements.

Do all Entrepreneur Routes lead to settlement?

No. The Innovator Founder Visa offers a route to settlement after three years. The Global Talent Visa leads to settlement after three or five years depending on the pathway. The High Potential Individual Visa does not lead to settlement and cannot be extended. The UK Expansion Worker Visa is a temporary route with no direct path to ILR.

Can I switch between routes?

In many cases, yes. Switching from within the UK is possible on certain routes, provided you meet the eligibility requirements of the new route. Switching is not permitted from a visitor visa or following an overstay. V Immigration can advise on your specific circumstances.

Do I need an endorsement?

Endorsement is required for the Innovator Founder Visa and for most applicants under the Global Talent Visa. It is not required for the High Potential Individual Visa or the UK Expansion Worker Visa.

What documents are typically required?

A valid passport, evidence of the qualifying endorsement, sponsorship or academic qualification, proof of English language ability, and personal maintenance funds. Route-specific documents may also apply. V Immigration reviews all documentation before submission.

Can I run a business on these routes?

The Innovator Founder, Global Talent, and High Potential Individual routes all permit self-employment and business activity. The UK Expansion Worker Visa is restricted to the specific role on the Certificate of Sponsorship and does not permit general business ownership.

How long does processing take?

Standard processing is typically around three weeks for overseas applications, though this varies by route. Priority services may be available. V Immigration advises on timelines as part of the application planning process.

Can V Immigration help with route selection?

Yes. We provide support across all Entrepreneur Routes — from eligibility assessment and route selection through to application submission, compliance advice, and settlement planning.
